I am excited by the opportunity to provide an online diary here at MomMD.com. Let me help you get to know me. I am a 31-year-old doctor in training in Texas. My specialty is psychiatry and I am working on a child and adolescent psychiatry subspecialization. I met my husband while getting my BA in History from the University of Texas at Austin, and we got married the summer before I started medical school at Texas Tech. We lived out in the red dust of the West Texas Panhandle for four years, and our oldest son Dylan was born the year I graduated, 1998. During my third year of residency, we had our second son, Casey. (For those of you keeping score at home, that makes them four and two, respectively.) Though I couldnt say that I have had other careers, I have had other selves, to include medical office building manager, medical billing and collections agent, pizza waitress and delivery driver, medical telemarketing survey operator, and belly dancer. Current selves other than psychiatrist, mother, and wife include tropical freshwater fish keeper, student in clicker training (classical conditioning principles applied to animal obedience), scrapbook enthusiast, beginning yoga student, gardener, aficionado of haiku poetry, and Presbyterian church member.
My reason for providing an online diary is that I am interested in writing, and the old saw goes that two write best, one should write what one knows. This is what I know and who I am, so it seems to be the beginning point. Ill be writing about patients whose identities have been disguised. Ill write to you about coworkers and family, too. In the next year some interesting things are going to happen. Ill continue to see kids in the outpatient clinic and at their school. Ill get to be part of some child custody cases. I will take the written board exam to become a board certified adult psychiatrist. Finally, you get to be part of my inner dialogue about where and how to practice when I finish training. Welcome and thank you.
