hey all!

I am wondering if anyone knows anyone who has been preggers during their first year of med school, and if so, how is anatomy lab handled? Isn't the formalin (sp) really toxic for the fetus? Anyhoo-- just wondering. Many people advise that a pregnant first year student should defer, but I'm wondering if there are ways to do it....

thanks! :cloud9:

Hi Em, I have one woman in my class who is pregnant, due in May, and went thru the entire anatomy class without any apparent problems. She discussed possiblilities and risks with both her doctor and our professor. Both agreed that as long as she took precautions like making sure she double gloved, didn't do the very close detail work so she didn't have a chance of being splashed by anything or inhaling too much of the fumes and she changed and showered immediately after lab time, she should be ok. She had no problems during the class and since it has been over (ended in November) she hasn't had any either. The doctor assured her that all is well so....barring any other complications, her baby should be born healthy.

Hope that helps.
