I don't know about the rest of you but it's really kind of weird being an attending now. I have my office, my own wing, my own nurse, salary, etc. They staff wanted to take it easy on me and only scheduled 10 patients for an eight hour shift!! Who has heard of such a thing? Anyhow, I'm not complaining I was just wondering if anyone else out there is just startin? I have my first call on Friday in a small hospital of 20 beds and I am also the ER physician for call- 2 ER rooms. So I'm out in rural Montana which I LOVE, reminds me of home in Alaska - a great thing. I hope everyone else out there is have as great a time as I am.

Congratulations! Isn't it a weird feeling to look around for your attending and realize that there isn't one and you are it?

Good luck to you.

My first month I swear I looked up EVERYTHING. Seriously, UTI treatment, vaccines, the whole bit. I was so afraid that I would mess up and I wouldn't have an attending to catch it! (Even though you spend your 3rd year of residency supervising the service and the attendings only glance at the charts...) HA. Enjoy it. I learned more my first year in practice than in my whole residency.

It is so interesting, when I became an attending (11 years ago) I actually became MORE careful than I ever was as a resident. To this day, I am more careful. Probably because I know I am it, I am the only one seeing the patient, I am the bottom line. Having said this, it is a lot more rewarding and a lot more fun than being a resident!
