Hi MS3 ladies! Well we made it half-way through third year. Yay! Who knows what they want to specialize in? Is it the thing you originally thought?

I had thought I wanted to go into psych or neuro, but now I am 90% sure I am going to go into OB. Say what you will about the field - I'm familiar with all the warnings. I just feel pretty sure that this is the right field for me. And it is such a great feeling to know!

Thought I would do ER going into 3rd year, and now I'm certain of it. No thank you OR or endless rounding. No thank you insurance and third party payer headaches.

Thought I was going into surgery for sure but as much as I would love to...I am letting it go. The life is EXTREMELY hard with very long hours that take a toll on your body. So, it will be either psych or IM for me...unless I totally fall in love with ob/gyn which I doubt...but ya never know.

OB made me detest anything with surgery---hated the OR. I think IM is too hard of a residency even though I'm pretty sure I'd like being a specialist. I'm thinking rads or neuro still. ER maybe too.

Wow, it's so cool to see my MomMD buddies finding their specialties. Remember when we were med school applicants? It doesn't seem like it was all that long ago!

I'll be doing Peds and probably specializing in Neonatology. I just finished a month elective that included some research and daily time in the NICU. I loved it. I'm acutally really sad the rotation is over and it'll be many months before I have an excuse to be in there again.

Still trying to decide between Child Psych and Peds...I'm guessing Jan-Feb at a busy children's hospital will make my decision for me

I have tried to keep that "open mind" for all specialties - turns out I love lots of things - peds, psych, OB/gyn - so I am sticking with Family Practice!!

Parrothead, have you thought about doing a triple-board program? (Peds, Psych, ChildPsych)

It does seem like yesterday we were all applying to medical school. This time next year we will be applying to residency! That just blows my mind. Look how far we've come ladies! Thanks for doing it with me.

You know, I have to say...halfway through I am even more confused! I came in thinking SURGERY, SURGERY, SURGERY and I loved the rotation! But, I also love my husband, my freetime and my life more. I am having a hard time really deciding what I WANT and am not sure that I can fight through a residency that I am not 100% committed to. Lifestyle vs Specialty is a difficult balance for me...we'll see!

I am still thinking Psych. When I was applying for medical school, I seriously wanted to do Neurosurgery. Yeah, right, I was crazy then. I got married, and realized I want to be happy. Surgery would not be right for me. I have my psych rotation in a few months, but I really think I will love it. I have enjoyed the psych patients I have met on other services.
