Hello, I would like to know if anyone has any advice or help. I graduated from College 9 years ago. and I've been on my own since I was 17. I struggled and I worked my entire college years just to support myself (I was so unstable/moving all the time)and unfortunatly My GPA suffered it was a 2.4. At the time I wasn't sure what I wanted to do I just wanted to have a college degree. I graduated as a Medical Technologist. I was the 1st in my family to go... My entire career has been in the Medical feild..I've volunteered and did just about anything you can name... I just love caring for people. For the past 4 years.. I've have worked at one of the Medical Schools as a Research Associate- Cancer Research. I have an interest in Med School. Most of the MD/PhD keep encouraging me to go back to school. I am surrounded by so many MD/PhD everything is at my fingertips... I know if I had the opportunity in college to just focus on school and not work I would have done better, but that is not my reality. I'm very embarra :crossfingers: sed.. Now that I'm stable (home/money)..I can dream again... I feel like 'Humpty-Dumpty' trying to put the pieces back together again.... What can I do? Is there any hope for me? Fortunately, My job supports higher education and I can take a leave-and or go part time. What can I do about my low GPA and where can I start?

Start by talking to someone at the school you work at. Like an admittions recruiter or someone you personally know. With so many connections I'm sure they would have the right advice for your new journey. I was fortunate to meet a few people at my medical school of interest, got my answer from them, and almost there :crossfingers: . I contact my advissor every 3 months to give updates and to make sure I'm on track. If you have any specific questions, feel free to pm me

Your post is a mirror of my life, my path, my GPA, my dreams - i'm 3rd year medical student now. I can't rehash my life right now, but if you want to pm me with specific questions that's fine. What efex said is right on target too. It can happen but you need to get past the fear of losing your stability and take the plunge to do the pre-req's required.

First off, I admire you for and not giving up and wanting to go back to school after surviving those rough times. Like the previous posters have said, just because you had bad grades 9 years ago does NOT mean that your chances are blown. If you take the required classes now and do well in them and explain your reasons for not doing well in school back then, the admissions committee will understand. That's part of why they require personal statements, interviews, etc. Just go as slow as you need to in order to make good grades and stay sane. And study really hard for the MCAT and do lots of practice tests so hopefully you'll get a good score first time. I think your experience in the medical field will help you, and if you can show them that you are an intelligent person who takes school seriously but had a lot of obstacles along the way that you not only overcame but learned from, then you will be a good applicant. Your dream will come true if you work hard and believe it will happen.
