Hi 7xMom. Funny to see your post, since I was contacting Loma Linda this morning about a residency program.
I did not go there for med school (I'm a 4th year med student on the east coast), but I am from that area and rotated there this summer.
What I know about their med school is that it is formally part of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and they give preference to applicants from the church. But I certainly met med students who were not SDA there.
The religious stuff is pretty blatant there if you can handle it. I'm not SDA but they were welcoming and interested to hear about my own religion.
I can't tell you anything about their preclinical stuff, but the Med Center is cutting edge and terrific. They also seem to be pretty soft on the med students 3rd and 4th year.
Incidentally, I knew someone in my hometown whose mom went there after the kids (4 I think) were grown up and then did her optho residency there (cushest of the cush, not vey high quality, but it is optho). So you would not be the first non-trad. Because of the religion, strong family values are big there and I think you would find them supportive of your situation. They look for students that care about the "whole person" and see practicing medicine as a "mission".
Hope that helps!
