I'm fairly new here, but i've been lurking for a while. I'm very excited to be in a group with so many wonderful women.

I will be starting my 2nd year of undergrad in the fal and DH and I are thinking of starting a family.

We want to start trying to conceive in Oct-November.

What I will probably do is take classes next summer too (before i deliver) and then maybe a night or online class in the fall and then go back full time in the spring, when the baby would be at least three months-- (depending upon how long it takes us to get preggers)

I know that med schools are becoming more accepting of the non trad student, but is missing a semester going to affect my chances of being accepted? What if it taking me more than 4 years to graduate?

Thanks in advance

I took several years to finish my prereqs, and it was all post bacc for me, all part time (after an art degree). I just got accepted to med school and am starting this fall (woo hoo!)

It is all part of the bigger picture. If you have a great GPA, great MCAT scores, clinical experience and/or research experience and good letters of recommendation, you will have a great chance of getting in. I took almost 2 years off after having my older son. It is an uphill battle if you are a non-trad, but it is by no means impossible.

Ditto hilseb. If you've got other things going (like a family) just make sure when you apply that this is made clear (so they don't think you were puttering around, slacking off). Plus, your kids will be a little older (as in not infants) when you start med school, and it's so nice to be able to talk to them about what's happening with Mommy. They'll be so proud of you - my kids are proud of me and I haven't even started. smile
