Hi everyone. I need help. I am an internist, mother of 2 working full time. It has been several years that I have realized that I do not want to do clinical medicine anymore.I am only doing it because we have a lot of bills to pay and one salary is not enough. Does anyone know where could I look for advice regarding non clinical careers??? Thanks

I know of physicians working in administration or for HMO's (reviewing cases, not seeing pts). I also have a friend who spend a few years working for a peer review organization (with a federal contract to review Medicare/Medicaid cases (quality review).

I am embarking on a similar 'research' path myself- trying to find out what kinds of non-clinical job opportunities are out there. This information seems hard to come by! I went to my local public library today and could not find that any book exists regarding what one can do with an M.D. I will be asking around and will post any info I've come up with. Maybe you should consider posting the same question in the "Careers" category of this website. Good luck....(to both of us!)

I'm an internist who has left clinical medicine and congratulate you on having the courage to find something else that will make you happier.

I used a book called Leaving the Bedside (The Search for a Non-Medical Career) that's no longer in print but can be special ordered from Amazon. There's a section in the back that lists lots of non-medical options. Otherwise, What Color is Your Parachute is always a good general reference. Both books will help you take an objective approach to something that is obviously fraught with lots of emotion.

Good luck!
