Hi, my name is Michelle, I am Sethina's sister-in-law and live in Brighton, U.K. I was a member a long time ago, but lost my registration details. I am a paediatrician, currently working full time, training to specialise in neurodisability. I also work in social paediatrics (fostering & adoption, child protection) and am involved in medical student teaching (fourth years) at GKT medical school in London. I have two lovely girls (aged nearly one year, and nearly 5), and a very understanding husband who stays at home with them (I dont think I would be doing it otherwise). I am lucky in that most of the team I work with have children, and are very supportive (probably because they are paediatricians?). michelle

Hi, I'm Courtney, and I just graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with a degree in Biochemistry. I'm starting med school at OU in the fall. I'm not a wife or mom yet (it'll be awhile), but when I found this site I thought it looked so helpful. It seems like women in medicine have a lot of issues to deal with that guys in medicine or women in other professions don't have, and I've already found a lot of encouragement from reading posts from women in all stages of their careers on this site. I'm really excited about starting at OU in August-it's always been my dream!

Hi! I'm a mother of two kids who are 4(boy) and 2(girl). I'm majoring Cell Molecular Biology at San Francisco State University. I'm graduating next Spring. Becoming a pediatrician has been my secret dream for a long time. I'm 39 and came to US 10 years ago. I've heard a lot of stories, either good or bad, to be a doctor. What I need now is a lot of supports and encouragements to build my own story. I don't want to regret not to try to be a doctor. I have a lot obstacles-language, culture, family obligation and etc...but I want to make all of them as my strength. Please let me join all of you to make it through together.

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Adrienne and I am a 3rd yr med student (somewhat non-traditional) at UMDNJ-RWJMS and am so blessed to be fulfilling my dream.

Hello,
I've already posted a new message in this forum and belatedly discovered this mosaic. So, forgive me for posting this twice.
I used to post and read here a few years ago. My name is Nicki and I am a professional musician with a Bachelors and Masters in Music Performance. I also have a BA in Biology from the University of Rochester from 1991. I lived in Spain for seven years and just moved home with my family.
I have had the nagging desire to become a doctor since I was a sophomore in college. I decided instead to go into music and have had no regrets. A few years ago I was feeling very disillusioned with my field, and I was depressed because of several years of trying to get pregnant to no avail. I began to look into medical school seriously, and began studying for the MCAT.
While this was happening, I got pregnant with triplets through IVF and have had an incredible journey that has resulted in my three beautiful boys, Ian, Nathaniel, and Halden. I had figured that my medical aspirations were over, but now that my guys are 19 months old, I am getting the itch to try for med school again. I am almost 37 years old, but I figure I've only been in my current field 13 years and if I am starting an internship at age 43 (as I currently calculate it) I will still have a good solid 20 years of practicing medicine ahead of me. (Should I be so lucky.)
I am trying to reach a decision about whether this is the right path for me. Something keeps dragging me back to this place time after time. So I've re-registered here at MomMD, having learned a great deal the last time. And now I am a Mom as well! :-)
Nicki

I'm a 36 yr old family doctor married to another family doctor with two kids, 5 and 2, and a third on the way. Like many others, I struggle daily with finding 'balance' in my life between energy for family, work, friends and myself. I have scaled back my practice in terms of days and scope of practice, and am definitely now on a 'Mommy Track.' I never imagined things would be so complicated. What has surprised me most after nearly 8 years in practice, is how little support we receive, most often from female colleagues in OUR OWN SPECIALTY! I have found over and over again, that getting along professionally with male colleagues is often easier!

I just started my third year clerkships this week, and my husband and I just found out we're expecting our first child. I've been very blessed so far -- very little morning sickness! I'm exhausted, but unsure if this is due to the pregnancy or being on surgery. My school is AWESOME when it comes to dealing with rearranging my schedule and supporting medical student families, but so far there are very few women in my class who have had babies during school. I hope this websiet enables me to meet other medical students, residents, and MD's who have found ways to balance work and their little ones.
