I looked up some but they sounded like they were more for physicians and med students. Also, any book recommendations that will help me clearly understand the healthcare debate and the state of healthcare in the country ?

This is a very good question and it is difficult to get a broad overview about what is going on. Medical journals do not really give you a good idea, so you have to go looking...
