How many sexual partners have you had? Inspired by another post in this forum. Please be honest, no one can determine who voted or anything. It's another subject that is rarely discussed, it is the personal secret that is never shared for fear of being judged, branded or something. Why is such judgement attached? Is it the same for men than women?

Just curious ... is there a literature on women physicians and number of sexual partners? Where did you get the idea to ask, Sethina?!

No I haven't seen another poll or study. I saw the discussion on the other topic by drmoo and remembered reading something in one of those woman mags that asked the question. I was actually inspired by a friend of mine who has had a lot of sexual partners, she's just come out of a seven year relationship and is off to find some more. It just got me thinking. It's very interesting, have people who answered the poll been totally honest - who knows....

I have to say that the results so far are what I would of expected. Ob/Gyns do you ever ask? Does this ever come up?

Actually, as an Ob/Gyn physician, I asked all my patients about number of sexual partners, orgasm, and the type of sexual practice. This topic is rare in the literatures. Congradulations!!!!

Sounds like a 'real' scientific study would be great. Who does unbiased research into this? What major sexual studies have there been after that McKenzie (is it)?

To the OB/GYN physician who replied to the post -

I'm surprised that these questions are part of your regular history protocol. I'm nearly 40, have seen a number of OB/GYN's and have never been asked these questions...even after a run-in w/ an abnormal pap and subsequent procedure to remove the cells from my cervix.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have been adverse to the questions. I'm all for discussing anything that impacts, or helps me more fully understand, my body.

I'm sure you have a number of collegues in this field. Do you know how typical it is to ask these questions? I can understand how this could be construed as sensitive area to discuss, but I'm surprised that I've consistently encountered Dr's who don't ask.

Every well female exam gets asked # of sex partners in the past year/ # of partners in your lifetime

It's kind of funny- when I saw this poll on the list- I thought it meant how many partners in your practice. This is a little more interesting
