Something to add to the wise advice given here is that you may want to avoid early preggo during surgery due the use of radiation in surgeries. you would miss out on some experiences.

I am on Anesthesia rotation (which I am loving) and found out I was preggo the weekend before starting it. There have been a couple patients that I could not attend to due to early radiation exposure. I was told that in later months, a lead apron would suffice but in the early weeks avoidance is best.

So, those who mentioned the fact that getting pregnant might take a while had good advice. Looks like I won't be 7-8 months pregnant during Surgery rotation after all....since I'm not pregnant yet, the chances of delivering during interview season are looking very probable(Nov)<---yikes!

As it's getting later in the year, I am wondering if I should try to keep baby fever down till mid-residency now? Although, I don't think any residency will give me the 3 months off can that I can take now, during 4th year.

Can you tell residency programs to postpone interviews until later in the interview season so you can recovery post-partum?

Well usually when they invite you they give you a range of dates (from Nov to Jan) and you pick your date, assuming you get invited early on. If you're waitlisted, then you have to take what they give you but that is usually later in the season anyway. So you wouldn't have to even tell them. Just pick the later dates! Keep TTCing away!

There is no good time to be pregnant! My first trimester was spent running to the bathroom during morning report to vomit and now that I'm almost in my third trimester I need to eat, pee, and sit down at least once an hour. Everyone has been really understanding (ie not making me see the highly contagious patients) so I think you'll be fine. Everyone will understand if you need a break!

It all depends on your residency program how much time off you can take. Delivering during intern year would not be ideal, with how busy you are all year. In my program, we were allowed 12 weeks off (8 unpaid). I did MICU with q4 overnight call at 20 weeks pregnant and was fine (other than throwing up a couple of times before rounds). I was just starting to show, so it generated some sympathy with the nursing staff.
