This way, there is always coverage each day for patients. I was laughed at and then told that it would never work and that each provider is different and wants their patients to be their patients, etc. What was missing there though (that I DID not say) was that the patient's needs come last.

I think your question was totally reasonable and they shouldn't have laughed at you. Maybe they each want to work only during school hours and be home the rest of the time. So there is no way they could do a job share because they all want the same shift. But surely there are other ways the clinic could accommodate the part-timers. Job-sharing is the simplest, but if that won't work, they could explore other options to make sure someone is available to cover patients when their primaries are not there. That is, if they are interested in improving their customer service.

I hope your former pedi has a better attitude than your friends.

Wow! Patients must really appreciate that.

I think that job sharing and part time physician work in general work best when all those involved practice in a similar way. In other words, I can feel comfortable when my partner treats my patients on my day off and vice versa. People who practice together usually will start to practice in similar ways. At least this is true in my practice, we all are very similar in practice styles. I would never make a statement like the one above, although I do a fair bit of work on my days off (phone calls to specialists and families) I know there are many times that other physicians see my patients and I am grateful for the coverage. It is interesting to me to hear it is not like this everywhere!

We came from a place where there was good cross-coverage, so it is surprising to me when things like this happen. We did get in to see a diff pedi who was glad that we hadn't waited until our other pedi returned from vacation and could squeeze him in. We apparently were being "appropriate".

On a side-note, my internist is part-time and there is never, ever a problem. She has a nurse practitioner that is available when she is not and I'm completely comfortable with that. In addition, her practice has things organized so that someone is available even when she is not.

Our pediatrician is a solo practitioner with an NP, part-time office hours (usually 10-4 for appts, there til 5 or later; NP works earlier a few days). One of them always has the pager, and depending on the issue, will accept a quick "house call" to her house.

that's the sort of pediatrician I wanted to be... and figured I couldn't do that, so I went into child psych ;-)
