Okay, so go see my previous discussion in General for the background. Basically, I'm due in late April, was accepted to a school (School A) 8 hours away from home. If I go to that school, we'll move (obviously). I'm still waiting to hear the final word on my local school (School B). I'm currently on Hold until interviews are complete. An acceptance/waitlist should be decided upon right around my due date. (Please God let there be a big fat envelope waiting for me when I get home from the hospital!!)
Based on much great advice, I've decided to defer, regardless of the school I get into.
So, here's my question. When should I request a deferral from School A? Since I'm still waiting on the local school, I feel bad going through the whole deferral thing with School A just to potentially say, "Oops. I got into my first choice. Sorry." On the other hand, I don't want to wait too long. Classes start in August. Is June (after the May 15 shuffle) a reasonable time to start the deferral process?
Secondly, let's say I get accepted off the waitlist to School B (local school) in June or July. Do I say, "Oh, yes! I would like to come, but next year instead." Will they be able to rescind my acceptance because I'm requesting a deferral? Has anyone had any experience requesting a deferral late in the cycle after being given a spot off the waitlist?
Third - Will they say "no"? Is it naive of me to think that having a newborn will be a good enough reason for them to grant a deferral? Who do I go to? The Admissions Director? The Dean? The career counselor?
