I'd like to think that eventually, I'll complete medical school. But if for some reason that doesn't happen for me, it will be because I decided to stick out what I'm currently doing, employed with the feds as a Scientist in a lab with Pathology flavor.

Kinda curious as to what other people's take on what their plan B is or would have been if they're already a Doc.

Interesting question, I am not sure if it is a plan B but I would love to teach kids and continue my hobby( photography and writing) as a job.

I would have made a fine accountant. smile I am all type-A like that.
My backup plan was always labwork, maybe crime lab or something similar.

Probably nurse-midwife or lactation consultant. Maybe peds NP.

I wish I liked teeth more because dentistry is a genius backup plan.

I don't have a back up plan but if I could do it over again I would have pursued a PhD or an MD/PhD and worked as a scientist in a lab. I love lab work and as an introvert it's perfect. I would have loved Path but cannot get past the whole dead body thing you have to do in residency, lol.

Definitely research.

I seriously considered going that route anyway, but I'm thinking (starting med school next year, so still in planning stages) of doing IM and eventually moving into something like endocrinology. That's the field I'm doing undergrad research in, and what I really like is the continual learning aspect, which I can accomplish in other ways (without sac'ing rats every few months).

This has really evolved for me other the years. Before medical school, my decision point was seminary (and, G-d willing, potentially the priesthood) vs medical school. Now, several years later, if I leave medicine, I'll likely do an epi/stats masters or PhD then take a job as an analyst/stats consultant type person. Not a tenure-track position, just a job-job.

As an intern, I do think about quitting more days than not, but I think that's par for the course, frankly.

I'm still practicing family medicine, but my husband left clinical medicine to work in the medical education industry. He now actually blogs about non-clinical opportunities for physicians and coaches them through the career transition process. His site pops up on Google if you type "non clinical jobs"

Novelist and a hobby multi-marathon runner per season, because I'd finally have time to go back to the marathon season running schedule I enjoyed during undergrad. Where for some reason - despite my heavy load of microbiology classes - I had a ridiculous amount of time to train for many, many half-marathons and a full. Medical school - sigh. It robbed me. frown

But I still love it! It's an abusive relationship. smile

I know quite a few women who are very happy as medical writers. It's a great way to work from home and have a balanced lifestyle.

Either an epidemiologist working for the CDC (haha, like that would be any less stressful or time consuming!) or a Naturalist/teacher working at a Nature Conservancy, teaching school aged-children. Oh yes, or an organic farmer. That is my true dream. Buy a piece of land somewhere here in New England and work the soil. And my husband will be the Chef at the restaurant on site... well we all have to have a dream! I am still working on him on that one. He is a dentist and has no intention of leaving his field, but he is a great cook!

I am planning to attend medical school too in the future.
But, I can't imagine myself pursuing somenthing else since I always wanted to be a Doctor and I think of my job as temporal.

I've thought about this a lot. Realistically, I'd be an engineer of some sort. But in fantasy-world - I'd hit the jackpot with a lucrative stock, thereby funding my ability to stay home with my babies and have many of them while pursuing hobbies, traveling the world, and cultivating myself a la the renaissance - learn to play the harp, speak portugese, and engage in highly witty/interesting conversation. But alas. . . this is but a fantasy.

A zookeeper, or a landscape gardener. I love gardening so much--I saw an avertisement for a gardening job working at a large botanical garden. The responsibilities were to take care of the plants and make decisions about landscaping. The salary was $28,000--but my first reaction was, "someone would pay me that much for this job?" haha..maybe that's a sign.
I also have a lifelong interest in animals, and I'm currently trying to organize a volunteer position at the local zoo--even if it were just cleaning out animal cages for an hour a month, I would love it. Alternatively, I would love to work on a non-profit farm (which I guess is not really a job! maybe just a very time-consuming hobby...)
Interesting to hear other people's pipe dreams! smile

As I reached the end of my career, I kinda wished I had become a HS math or science teacher. I now know several math and science teachers who are making more than some family docs I know, and working better hours too.

My fantasy job was always to be the fiddler in a bluegrass band. I don't know how to play the fiddle, but the fiddler always looks like s/he is having the most fun.

I do not do medicine anymore, but I am really enjoying the volunteer jobs I have taken on: Doing taxes for low income families every Saturday during tax season, two committees at the medical school where I used to teach, serving funeral luncheons at my church, and the church sewing group where we sew items needed by community agencies. I finally took the Catholic church's class "Protecting God's Children" so I can volunteer at our school. I would like to tutor kids in math. I ended up teaching all three of my kids algebra because their algebra teacher had no clue. My kids said I was good at it.

This is my plan B!

I didn't pursue medicine earlier for a variety of reasons. While I was always interested in medicine, it was something I'd never been encouraged towards and felt that it was something I could do. I never felt smart enough, and it couldn't be further removed from reality where I'm from. Having returned to school now in my 30's is a completely different experience, I LOVE it. I finally decided I could wait until the end of another decade and think about everything I wished I'd done for the last ten years, or I could just...go do it.

I don't know, I should probably come up with a plan C though, just in case. smile
