Hi,

I think I've posted here in the past. I've been out of medicine for a few years to stay home. I may have to go back to work soon due to family circumstances.

I still have a license in another state and I am working on board re-certification now.

I saw on a previous post that someone volunteered at a clinic to get experience.

Has anyone been able to get a job working in a urgent care or other part-time job in their field, after a long absence?

Thanks for any advice.

I know there are doctor-moms out there that have described their experiences with this, and I work with just such a person. hopefully they'll see your post soon!

Welcome, janie j! What is your specialty? How long have you been out?

Some advice for while you're out would be: keep up your licensure (state and DEA), keep up on your CME, and stay in touch with professional colleagues, if possible. Advice for going back would be: figure out what is new in medicine and read up on that, have confidence that your skills will return, and find someone to supervise you upon your return (if it's been many years). It would probably be easier to arrange supervision with a training program because they are used to supervising. Alternatively, you could arrange for some sort of proctoring on the job, if you know a place that is open to that.

Good luck!

the colleague I'm thinking of left for several years during which time she volunteered monthly or so at a free clinic. when her kids were all in school, she contacted and then stayed in touch with a potential employer over the possibility to work parttime, and eventually a shared position was developed for her so that's when she started back.

I quit clinical medicine after 4 yrs in feb and moved to another state so my husband could get a new job and support us and had my second child in june. my state lic isn't up until 2010 but my dea expires in oct. i called and they said they could not renew it if i changed states without an office address so i will let my dea expire. my internal med cert is not due for 5 yrs. i left under bad terms with my practice partners who were "stealing money" from me by an unfair overhead setup. i was naive at the beginning and didn't realize how the one doc was manipulating everyone else with control of the staff etc.. so I was worried about getting recommendations if I go back to work since i was outpatient only and didn't know many other docs personally. I am out 5 years from my residency program. could i get recommendations from that far back? do i need them? any advice would be great. i want to go back part time or non clinical in IM

IrishMD, I was able to get the DEA to use my home address as my office address. They told me that they would then have the right to come inspect my home. I told them that they would not find any drugs but they would find a lot of toys. smile Maybe that would be an option for you.

I have found a tremendous amount of manipulation in my own work over the years - particularly from well-situated men toward vulnerable women docs. think back if there is any sympathetic MD who could write a letter as you will probably need a couple of names as references. yes , letters from prior residency also possible.

I am in a similar situation except I am one month away from finishing residency and plan on taking a long leave of absence to raise our kids (I have a 3 month-old now and plan on one or two more in the next few years)...so I haven't even established a practice yet. I was wondering what the rules are in regards to allowable length of time away from clinical practice before one has to do a lot of retraining...and if retraining is required, what does this usually entail? I would be willing to work part time 15-20 hours a week to maintain my licensure and board certification but if I were unable to find a part-time position, what would my options be? Anyone? It's so wonderful to find women MDs going through the same things. I was starting to feel like I must be the only mom MD considering giving up work for a while. Most of my family/friends think I am crazy to risk losing my ability to practice medicine in the future after all these years of time and sacrifice to get where I am.
