Hi, new to this site. I am a radiology mom (breast imaging) who has been working in private practice for 2yrs. Having experienced years of grueling extensive training (like everyone else), apathy and in-fighting from colleagues, and the ever present threat of litigation, I now find myself wondering if it was all worth it. I saddens me to think that I may have wasted so many years in training only to now find myself dreading going to work every day. Lately, I have been thinking about a non-clinical transiton &/ or public health. Has anyone tried this? Any advice or mentorship for either sticking it out in clinical radiology or doing something else? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Irisgirl I don't have any good answers, sorry but I noticed you haven't had any replies and I know that sucks (want of better word).

I can sympathize with how you feel though, before I took a 'break' from busy HMO primary care practice I felt very much as you seem to now. I stayed home, took care of house and family and felt good for awhile but then when I tried finding the ideal very limited PT/locums job or even volunteer clinical work this new small town we now live in had nothing to offer.

So I continued to stay home and now my short break has turned into a few years and I'm scrambling to try to get back at all. I have been doing some authoring and editing for Board review firm that helps me keep up with some reading but pay is minimal and I'm getting cabin fever too.

So whatever you do, learn from me and don't stay out too long.
Best to you.

pastpedmd: Thanks for the advice. I suspect the lack of enthusiastic responses may reflect low sympathy for a rad complaining about anything....but believe me, rads carries its own special load of crap.

Sorry to hear that your break has resulted in difficulty getting back to practice. At least you are keeping your medical mind active with the editing job. I'm sure an opportunity will open up for you soon. Or, if you can invest some cash in it, there are career counselors who could help you create your own opportunity.

Good luck and don't give up
