Hello ladies,

I am in the process of selecting my wedding band (yay!!) and someone mentioned to me that some hospitals will allow you to wear a solid wedding band, but not a wedding band with diamonds in it (because it has more little niches to harbor bacteria). As it is, I have a solitaire engagement ring, so I wanted a wedding band with tiny diamonds going all the way around.

I read the policies for some of the hospitals in the area, and most say that you can wear a wedding band, but NONE give any specifics about the wedding band. Can anyone give advice about this? I realize that it will depend according to the hospital I work at, but it would be nice to have a general idea. I don't want a diamond wedding band if I would have to take it off for work every day. (On a side note, can I wear my engagement ring to work? I assumed not but I was wondering what other experiences people had).
Thanks for your advice!

I always wore my wedding band and diamond solitaire engagement ring in the hospital. You will have to take them both off to go into surgery, no matter what kind they are. NEVER put them in a pocket in your scrubs. I always knotted them into the waistband tie so I would be sure to see them when removing the scrubs. You can also clip them to the lanyard that holds your ID badge, but never in a pocket, and never pin them to the scrubs.

Oh heavens, if they actually enforce those policies, I'd be surprised. I have seen some *crazy* rings on people--on multiple fingers. Plus acrylic nails and the whole boot (yum, what's growing under there?).

Get the wedding ring and engagement ring you love. You can choose to not solder them in order to have the option of wearing one or the other. If it *really* becomes an issue, you can always buy a cheap solid band. The only caveat is if you become a surgical PA and are in surgery all day and it becomes annoying to take them on and off (then get a really cute and sturdy necklace to hang all that bling!).

Get what you want. You won't live in the hospital. I made myself a couple of necklaces with "lobster claw" clasps to hold my engagement and wedding rings when I'm in the OR, which is the only time I ever need to take them off.

get what you want- if it's a row of little diamonds, then do it. i personally went for the simple route- solid gold band. i like that it's smooth and doesn't get caught on gloves.

I would pick something that is durable to all the hand washing/gloves/etc. If you pick something too fragile/dainty, I would be afraid that it might get damaged.

get whatever you like! i rotated at lots of different hospitals, none have ever enforced any ring rule.

i don't even bother to wear my rings in the hospital, but usually wear them in clinic. i feel like they'll get too many germs and its a hassle when washing hands.

Thank you for the advice!! I hadn't even considered hand washing/glove wearing difficulties, but good things to think about! I will let you know what I get. Still undecided!

There are only 2 places where I've had to remove my rings, the OR and the NICU. Our NICU has a policy against wearing rings with stones in them because they can harbor bacteria and neonates are such vulnerable little things.

My advice is to get what you want to wear. If you sometimes have to take off the solitaire, it's no big deal. smile
