I am a recently single parent with young children... currently in 3rd year. I have no family in the area and no assistance from my ex... which is to say that I am relying heavily on childcare with a cost approaching $3,000 per month.

I was hoping for advice regarding loans and etc. to cover these expenses.

Have you looked into state programs? I know my state (MS) offers some financial assistance for childcare for low income families which most families in medical school including single parents usually qualify for. Another area you might look is programs like the YMCA, Salvation Army, or Boys and Girls Club. They often have childcare programs at reduced rates. Also if your medical school is apart of a larger university you may qualify for the university's childcare center if they have one. I can;t imagine what a stressful time this may be, but hang in there, do some research, and find out what your options are.

Depending on your school, you can increase your budget to cover childcare.

Is there any way to make your ex pay? Because the reality is he should.

Every state is different. Where I am you have to not only attend school but work a substantial # of hours per week to qualify for daycare assistance. But I would look into any health care options or food assistance they can provide even if day care assistance isn't an option. The reality is you will pay far more into those programs than you could ever possibly use in the next year and few months.

Good luck!
