I will be starting the physician reentry program in Nov.
I am just wondering if anyone knows if the cost is tax deductible ?
I know the medical malpractise is.
And the childcare during that time should be deductible too.

Thanks

I don't know if the program is tax deductible.
Childcare is a little tricky. You can't just write it off, but you can put up to $5000 pre-tax money in a flexible spending account and use that to pay for childcare. There is also a tax credit for up to $6000 for childcare of two or more children. I can't remember exactly how those things work out together. Maybe someone else can explain it better.
In the end though, most of our childcare is not tax deductible.

The cost would be deductible as a business expense only if you had earnings from that business in the same year. You might qualify for an education deduction or lifetime learning tax credit. I would imagine someone at the program might know if the program qualifies for either of those.

My son has gotten Lifetime Learning credits for bartending school and flight school.

I don't know the answer to your tax question, but I just wanted to wish you luck with the program! I hope you will let us know how it goes.

I did ask an accountant..apparently not deductible at federal level but can deduct 2k on state level.
however, i am advised trying to delay paying the program until next year when i have earned income and get a 1099..then he can deduct it as business expense.

So you need to have 2 children in childcare to get deduction ?
