Hi everyone!
I will be going to medical school in the fall of 2012. My husband and I were planning to have a child during the summer between first and second year. Last night, it occurred to me that being pregnant during M1 is probably not a good idea because of anatomy lab.

Does anyone know if it's possible to be safe/have no negative implications to the baby in utero when taking anatomy??

TY!

There are lots of threads about this. Try a search. I was pregnant from 10 weeks on in anatomy until my baby was born. I'm quite certain he is perfect. Don't drink the solution in the tank. Try to avoid scuba diving in the cadaver juice. You'll be fine.

"no negative implications" is a tall order, but from what info I could gather, it seemed relatively safe, at least safer to me than the CMV, H1N1, radiation and nitrous oxide of 3rd year. ( oh nuts, I'm going to give you a complex now.)

Talk to the lab coordinator and get the MSDS sheets or at least the info on what comprises the stuff. FWIW, I wore a mask, double gloved, stayed away from perinephric fat, etc, more out of first-time-mom paranoia than anything else. (Perfect baby born right after M1.)

Forum search! High yield!

I became pregnant right at the end of first year and only had a couple of weeks of gross anatomy left - I double-gloved and wore a mask. In some of the other threads I've read, some people have mentioned that they're not allowed to take gross anatomy pregnant, so that may be something to look into at your school because if that's the policy, it would force you to defer a year or go part-time (if that's an option). I don't think that's really common, but not sure.

Good luck! Congrats on starting up next year. smile

sorry..this is a stupid question. Although I registered on this forum a couple of years ago I didn't start really reading/looking through till now. What is the best way to search? I used the search function and typed in different combinations of anatomy lab/pregnancy/concerns but no posts regarding that topic are coming up? Lots of topics on pregnancy and when to have kids etc but can't find any on anatomy lab, per se!

Hi Cloudless, I typed "gross" into the search function and came up with several relevant threads (in fact, one was my own from last year when I had trouble using the search function wink. Here are a few links:

I was pregnant all my first year, I wore a mask that I got from occupational health. It was hard to breath because I already felt short of breath, and you can't really talk to anyone with the mask on. Other than that my pregnancy turned out fine and I have a healthy 17 month old now.

I was pregnant for five weeks during anatomy lab. I actually kept it a secret, but started wearing a mask (the kind they give you in the Drs. office when you are sick). I felt comfortable after reading threads that this was okay, despite not reading any actual studies. My kiddo is fine.
