My son has ADHD. Of course he does! I've known since he was an infant that something was off. Became even more apparent when his sibling was born and I realized "oh, this parenting thing can actually have moments of FUN. This is why people have kids."

So, really, it is no suprise. But it still breaks my heart! We are in the process of figuring out how to best support him. Treatment, school help etc. My tipping point has been his comments: "I hate myself because I can't focus." "I'm not a good kid." This from the child I love more than words can describe.

Anyone else in the ADHD camp?

To a certain extent, all three of my children have it, though the oldest was definitely the worst. (They are 28, 25, and 23). All three have college degrees and good jobs (well, OK, Baby Daughter doesn't have a good job yet, but she's in theater so she probably never will, but she is supporting herself.) Never looked at it as a disorder, because I come from a long line of folks who are all just like my kids. I always looked at it more as just who we are rather than as a disorder. We did a lot of manipulation of their educational environments, put the oldest in the Gifted program, and eventually they all succeeded, though there were plenty of bumps along the way. I read a lot of Thom Hartmann ("Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception") and Thomas Armstrong ("The Myth of the ADD Child')
Never medicated any of them, but that's just me. They are now all very responsible, and the oldest is probably the most organized kid I have. The best part of having kids like this is that watching them grow up is so much FUN! They constantly amaze you! There are a lot of pluses. They have lots of energy, lots of good ideas, they are very creative, and they tend not to follow the pack, so none of my kids ever got involved with drugs or even smoked. The younger two don't even drink!
None of them were ever even aware they had a "disorder".

I work with ADHD everyday! Have you ever heard of Neurofeedback? It works wonders and I have helped countless kids come off of their meds and excel in school. This is a non-invasive, drug free, completely safe method that trains the brain to be more efficient. It was discovered during research for the space program at NASA in the 1960's.
If you are interested, go to www.eeginfo.com and click on the "Find a provider" tab. This will help you find a clinician in your area. The website is also full of information, videos, testimonials and research.
I hope this helps. It's not a quick fix but it's worth it and in most cases you see improvements from the first session. I know how tough it can be on parents, family and especially on these great little kiddo's.

Thanks for your comments. I'm taking a multifaceted approach. It is so easy to see that my marriage problems, our working too much and juggling too many things only worsen his dysfunction. I'll write my own RX to treat that part of it!

I prescribe medication to children every day even though I would prefer to treat ADHD in a more integrative way. There are no easy answers. I haven't tried neurofeedback but will certainly check into it more.
