Registering for the three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination is a relatively easy process. Assuming that he or she has met all of the eligibility requirements, a medical student can register for the Step 1, Step 2 CS, and Step 2 CK of the USMLE on-line at the National Board of Medical Examiners website. USMLE Step 3 registration, however, is handled in cooperation with the relevant medical licensing authority.
USMLE Registration by Foreign Medical Graduates
Those students who have pursued their medical education at a foreign institution should register for these sections of the USMLE at the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates website.
Standard Registration for USMLE Step 1 or Step 2
Students who apply for Step 1 or Step 2 CK are asked to choose a three-month period in which they would like to take the exam. Once their application is approved, they can contact the test administrator to set up a specific testing date. The Step 2 CS is offered year-round, and students who apply will be given twelve months of eligibility to take the exam. After a student's application is approved, he or she can contact the test administrator to set up a specific test date.
USMLE Step 3 Registration
Registering for Step 3 of the USMLE is done in cooperation with the relevant licensing authority. These organizations have their own policies regarding registration, so candidates are asked to contact them in order to register. When an application to take Step 3 is approved, the candidate is typically given 90 days of eligibility in which to take the exam. Prospective test-takers should note that Steps 1, 2 CK, and 3 are not administered during the first two weeks of January. Also, because of the high volume of test-takers during these periods, it is more difficult to sit for the exam from May to July and from November to December.
