Internal medicine physician and mom of 4

Day One...

is quickly approaching. The remaining days are filled with squeezing every last glorious drop out of this beautiful late summer, kissing chubby baby cheeks, parading to the park, hiking to waterfalls, exploring our new city, and trying to remember that I do know enough to practice medicine all by myself.

For years now I've heard that this transition to Attending is the hardest yet. Of all the transitions in responsibilty throughout medical education, this is it. The proverbial buck, the culmination, the pot at the end of the rainbow. The summit.

I suspect that like many other transitions in life this, too, will prove to be more of a resting spot than a summit. A turnout to view the fantastic vistas where I've been and the challenges waiting up ahead.

Attend:

1. to be present at

2. to go with as a concomitant or result; to accompany

3. to take care of; minister to; devote one's services to

4. to wait upon; accompany as a companion or servant

5. to take charge of, watch over; look after; tend; guard

I strive to be present. Whatever awaits me on day one, I strive to be present. For my patients, my family, my self.

The scales of work/life have been heavily weighted this summer on the side of life. My well is full, my batteries charged. I am ready.
