If you’re in the market for a physician career change, there’s an invaluable tool to help you through your transition.
Naturally, I’d like to say that it’s The Physician Odyssey Program, and leave it at that! However, I’d be remiss as a physician career coach if I didn’t make you aware of Dr. Mike McLaughlin’s book “Do You Feel Like You Wasted All That Training?: Answers About Transitioning to Non-Clinical Careers for Physicians“.
An esteemed and dear colleague, Mike McLaughlin, is a plastic and hand surgeon who, after much deliberation, left clinical practice to ultimately start a very successful medical communications company,Peleton Advantage, as well as create a resource website, Physician Renaissance Network for physicians interested in career change, especially of the nonclinical variety.
In doing so, in his book, he has documented his journey, liberally sprinkled with practical advice. He ask just about all questions of his readers that we would ask or should be asking ourselves as physicians considering a career change. While he expects us to find our own answers, he also shares what his thought processes were at the time, along with helpful tools for decision-making.
In fact, I see his book as an essential companion to The Physician Odyssey Program … prompting the Introspection and Exploration that is such essential preparatory steps for embarking on a meaningful career transition. And then serving as an example of how to methodically and systematically go about accomplishing the career goals that you would set for yourself up for having done the upfront deep thinking work. He honestly acknowledges his missteps and failures, and yet it is deeply reassuring to recognize that within a manageable period of time, he was able to transition into his dream career, and a highly realistic circumstances.
I have also had word directly from Mike that he is working on his next book. If it’s anything like this one, I very much look forward to being an early reader of the next volume
