My parents come from Korea, but they never called me garbage. Quite the opposite. They made me believe that I was special and that there was nothing in the world that was out of my reach as long as I was willing to do the work. They expected and got top grades from us kids. Going to college was also expected. I don't know what would've happened if either of us got a B before college as neither of us did. My brother is a dentist and I am a doctor.
One problem I see here with my upbringing is that I felt somewhat betrayed when I found out that despite my parents' promises, not all things are achievable with hard work.
It seems that the article is somewhat sensationalized to catch non-Asian eyes. Or may be her parents did call her garbage, but I would not say that is typical. At least not in my and my family and friends' experiences.
