Great topic! We can always count on you, Fearless, to keep us focused on the positive! I love it when:
-My little girl laughs that deep belly laugh that babies are so great at
-My son laughs at a little joke that he made up or when he remembers something funny that he saw or heard
-My husband makes a joke when I am being irritable. He always knows how to calm me down!
-When a publisher says that they like my writing
-When a publisher wants to but my writing
-When a parent I give advice to says I was really helpful
-When I think of kind our extended family is to us
for those of you who have seen the sound of music this is just like the song "my favorite things"!
my 6 month old son:
when he looks delighted to see me come through the door
his goofy little laugh that makes me laugh my goofy laugh(which makes him laugh some more!)
when he asserts his independence and tries to feed himself (what a mess!)
when he cuddles up to me and nurses himself to sleep
when he makes this serious expression that looks exactly like my husband
he made coffee and pancakes this morning, out of the blue, before he went in to round
he remembers to page or call me at least once a day, just to say hello (even throughout our surgical internships -- before the 80 hour workweek!)
he still seems to think I'm beautiful after 7 years together
she calls to discuss a case with me as though she actually wants my opinion (unlikely given her 35 years experience, and my 4 years of training) and then listens to what I say and teaches me things without condescension.
...and the thought that I will grow to be like her
his stories (by the first few words, I know which one he's about to tell.) There's something very soothing about the repetition.
and last but not least:
Surgical residency (which I miss since Ive been in the lab):
the operating room -- the operations and the rituals
the opportunity to make someone's life better in a concrete way
... I never realized I had so much joy in my life...
Whenever I have these thoughts my body shivers and my lips smile that's how I know that these things what brings me joy.
1- When I think that I live in the US. YES, for people who are born here they take it for granted. But to me it means a lot. I have my freedom my full dignity as a woman and most of all I have choices in my life.
2-My husband, his support, his cool temper, his smile and his endless love to me.
3- My kids, just theire innocent faces.
4- And last but not least, having my mother living with me so I know for sure that she is OK.
Thanks God for all the good things you bring to our lives.
