I'm a first year medical student fresh out of college and I know it might be a little too early to start thinking about this, but I always like to plan for the future at least a bit. I would like to start a family after residency (or a couple of years after). So, I was just wondering if part-time work as a hospitalist is easy to come by after residency?
Money isn't a big issue for me (I have a partner who can also contribute) so I am willing to take a pay-cut if I can work maybe 20-36 hours? For anyone with experience, what is the pay like for these kinds of jobs? Do benefits exist? Do these kinds of jobs even exist? I live in New York City so there are plenty of hospitals around.
I am thinking I'd be a good fit for either internal medicine/family practice or pediatrics. Emergency medicine also interests me a little but I'm not so sure about it yet. I also understand that residency training is grueling, but I'm not avoiding full-time work because I want to be lazy, I'd just like to settle down and raise my children at a certain point in my life.
