this is my first time posting, but i've come to this site many times in frustration, hoping for answers. i am finishing up my internship and have been mostly unhappy all year, away from my toddler.
i was debating other options to begin with, and last week i found out that i'm pregnant again (sort of planned, but happened faster than we thought- as in the very first try!) now i'm pretty sure about taking a break, but how long can you really take off? is it feasible to take off 2,3,... 5 years and then return to a program to finish up? my program is 3 years long, so i have 2 left. my heart is just not in it now. i think i'd want to stay at home for at least 2 years. any jobs (as an MD) that i could work after just one year of residency part-time (to help pay my loans that would come due?)
any suggestions/personal experience would be appreciated.
there are a few posts around on this topic from a few months back.
I resigned myself to not working 80 hr weeks after my little one was born but have continued to work in the capacity of surgical assisting part-time (orthopaedics - I'm in Australia and need the medical degree to do this here - maybe they use NP's in the US?)
Its fun and easy and I'm still sort of keeping my hand in and can discuss cases etc - I'm with a great team and it gives me the valuable time to spend with my child in her formative years.
I found it very very hard initially to be giving up my 'dream' - I had started surgical training but now I realise that I haven't necessarily given it up but maybe postponed it or am just giving myself the option to find out what (to me) is really important in life.
My friends are still doing the grind and are always calling offering to trade places so they can have a break and they don't even have kids and many are still single as have no time to hang out and socialise and meet their Mr Right!
Best of luck with finding some work......
