MomMD.com Forum: Member User Instructions

The MomMD.com forum is one of our primary means of connecting women in medicine. Once registered as a forum member, using the forum should be quite intuitive.

We have compiled this information as a resource, should you have any questions about forum features or use. The document is not all-inclusive, so if you have questions that we have not covered here, please let us know atThis email address is being protected from spambots. Forum Login Bar

Sign in to the forum here using your display name and password:

Once logged in, the forum will display your member tabs across the top, as shown below:

Below the member tabs is a shaded area that includes your display name (which links to your profile), the date of your last visit, the Logout option, and to the right, a link to your Private Messages. It also displays your location path within the forum (e.g. Forums>Index  or  Forums>Women in Medicine>General Discussion).


 

Forum Member Tabs: Index

Index: This tab brings you to the forum home page, which displays the forum sections and categories.

: A green folder icon preceding a forum category indicates that the category contains new (unread) messages/posts. The number of new posts in the category will appear in green text to the right of the category title ().

: A blue folder icon preceding a forum category indicates that the category contains no new messages/posts.

To the right of each category title, you will find the number of topics within the category, the number of replies to topics, and a brief summary of the last post made to the category.

Click on a category title to enter the category and view topics.

You may also enter a category by selecting it from the Board Categories dropdown menu and clicking Go.

 


 

Forum Member Tabs: Recent Topics

Recent Topics: This tab offers a filtered view of the forum. You may filter the system to display only topics that have had activity within a specific time-period. Topics appear in chronological order, showing the most recent activity at the top.

From the first dropdown menu, you may select from the following time-periods:

·        All: The system will sort all topics chronologically, showing the most recent activity at the top.

·        Since last visit: The system will only display topics with activity since your last visit.

·        4/8/12/24/48 Hours: The system will only display topics with activity in the set number of hours.

·        Week: The system will only display topics with activity in the last week.

·        Month: The system will only display topics with activity in the last month.

·        Year: The system will only display topics with activity in the last year.

Use the Board Categories dropdown menu to exit this tab and navigate directly to a desired forum category. If the system does not automatically navigate to the selected category, select Go to initiate the action.


 

Forum Member Tabs: New Topic

New Topic: Select this tab to start a new topic without first navigating into the category.

 In the screen that displays, populate the following fields:

·        Category: Select the destination category from the dropdown menu.

·        Subject: Type the title of your topic.

·        Topic Icon: The default topic icon is a blank sheet of paper. If you prefer, you may select a different icon from the displayed options. Select the radio button near the desired icon.

·        Message: Type your message in this window. Use the formatting options to the right of Boardcode to format text in your message, to add a table, to add a spoiler (which hides spoiler text so readers must click on it to reveal the text), to hide text from guests, and to insert other items/links into the message. You may also add emoticons from the list.

·        Enlarge /Shrink: Select Enlarge to increase the size of the message window. Select Shrink to decrease the size of the message window.

·        Subscribe: Check this box to subscribe to the topic. The system will notify you of replies to the topic.

Preview: Select this button to preview your message before posting.

Submit: Select this button to post your message to the forum.

Cancel: Select this button to cancel the new topic.

Forum Member Tabs: No Replies

 

No Replies: This tab offers a filtered view of the forum. The No Replies tab only displays topics to which no one has yet replied. You may further filter the list to display only unanswered topics that members posted within a specific time-period. Topics appear in chronological order, showing the most recent activity at the top.


 

 From the first dropdown menu, you may select from the following time-periods:

·        All: The system will chronologically display all topics to which there have been no replies.

·        Since last visit: The system will only display topics posted since your last visit that still have no replies.

·        4/8/12/24/48 Hours: The system will only display topics posted within the set number of hours that still have no replies.

·        Week: The system will only display topics posted in the last week that still have no replies.

·        Month: The system will only display topics posted in the last month that still have no replies.

·        Year: The system will only display topics posted in the last year that still have no replies.

Use the Board Categories dropdown menu to exit this tab and navigate directly to a desired forum category. If the system does not automatically navigate to the selected category, select Go to initiate the action.


 

Forum Member Tabs: My Topics

 

My Topics: This tab displays the list of topics in which you have participated. Topics appear in chronological order, showing the most recent activity at the top.

Use the Board Categories dropdown menu to exit this tab and navigate directly to a desired forum category. If the system does not automatically navigate to the selected category, select Go to initiate the action.


 

Forum Member Tabs: Search

Search: Select this tab to perform an advanced search by keyword or by display name. Type the keyword into the Search by Keyword field and/or the display name into the Search by User Name field(s).

With a keyword and/or a display name entered, you may filter the search using the following Search Options:

·        Find Posts from:

This option filters search results by time-period. First select from All, Since last visit, 4/8/12/24/48 Hours, Week, Month and Year. Then select between And newer and And older to show posts that are either newer or older than the selected time.

·        Sort Results by:

First, select Title, Number of views, Posting date or Category to set the primary sorting criteria. Then select Increasing order or Decreasing order to set the secondary sorting criteria.

·        Jump to Result Number:

If you would like the search to skip a number of results, enter that number into the first text box. Then, use the dropdown menu to select the number of results (5, 10, 15 or 20) displayed per page.

·        Search in Categories:

Further limit your search to specific categories by selecting the category or categories from the list. Holding the SHIFT key while making your selection allows you to select multiple consecutive categories. To select multiple non-consecutive categories, hold the CTRL key (PC) or the command key (MAC)

At the bottom of the window, select Search to initiate the search or select Cancel to cancel.


 

Forum Member Tabs: Profile

Profile: Select this tab to view and/or edit your profile page. The Profile for [your display name] window displays your set Location, Gender, Birthdate and Signature based on information you provide. To edit this information, select the Edit>>button (see image below for location).

The Profile for [your display name] window also includes Posts, Subscriptions, Favorites and Thank You tabs to display your recent posts, your category and topic subscriptions, your favorited topics, and "thank yous" you have given or received for posts (see image below for location).

Under the Subscriptions tab, you may check the small box to the right of a subscription in the list and select Unsubscribe selected from the dropdown menu to unsubscribe from the topic.

Under the Favorites tab, you may check the small box to the right of a favorite topic in the list and select Unfavorite selected from the dropdown menu to "unfavorite" the topic.

Editing Your Profile

With the Profile tab displayed, select the Edit>> button to edit your profile information.

The following screen will display with the User Account tab selected:

User Account tab:

Under Edit User Information, you may change your display name (Name), email address, and password. If you change your password, you must enter it twice: once in the field next to Password, and again in the field next to Verify Password.

Profile Information tab:

Select the Profile Information tab to display fields that allow you to input the following information:

·        Personal Text

·        Birthdate

·        Location

·        Gender

·        Web site Name

·        Web site URL

·        Twitter username

·        Facebook username

·        Other social media usernames/identifiers

Hover over the blank fields next to LinkedIn, Blogger, Flickr, etc., to see what identifier to enter for each network.

·        Signature text

This text will appear at the bottom of each of your posts. You can use smileys and BBCodes in your signature.

Avatar Image tab:

Select the Avatar Image tab to upload an avatar for your profile.

Click on Choose File and select the file from your drive or, if available, you may select an avatar from the default gallery.

Select Save to upload or Cancel to cancel.

Forum Settings tab:

Select the Forum Settings tab to set your preferred message order (First post first or Last post first) and to set your preference for whether the system should list your display name under "Who Is Online" when you are online.

 "Who Is Online" information appears at the bottom of the forum index page and at the bottom of some forum tab pages.

This Show Online setting also impacts the display of the/ icons below your avatar.

Select Save to save the settings or Cancel to cancel.

 


 

Posting in and Following a Forum: Category View

The image below is a user’s view of a selected forum category.

Use these buttons to perform the main functions in this view:

Jump to Top/Bottom of Page

 / :

Select the down arrow button to jump to the bottom of the page. At the bottom of the page, select the up arrow button to jump back to the top.

Mark Topics Read

:

Select this button to mark all topics as read.
All "unread" identifiers are removed.

Subscribe to Category

:

While in category view, select this button to subscribe to the entire category. The system will notify you of replies to all topics in the category.

Create a New Topic

:

Select this button to start a new topic in the current category. The following "New Topic" screen will display.

Populate the following fields:

·        Subject: Type the title of your topic.

·        Topic Icon: The default topic icon is a blank sheet of paper. If you prefer, you may select a different icon from the displayed options. Select the radio button near the desired icon.

·        Message: Type your message in this window. Use the formatting options to the right of Boardcode to format text in your message, to add a table, to add a spoiler (which hides spoiler text so readers must click on it to reveal the text), to hide text from guests, and to insert other items/links into the message. You may also add emoticons from the list.

·        Enlarge /Shrink: Select Enlarge to increase the size of the message window. Select Shrink to decrease the size of the message window.

·        Subscribe: Check this box to subscribe to the topic. The system will notify you of replies to the topic.

Preview: Select this button to preview your message before posting.

Submit: Select this button to post your message to the forum.

Cancel: Select this button to cancel the new topic.

Posting in and Following a Forum: Topic View

The image below is a user’s view of a selected topic.

The buttons at the top of the window allow you to perform topic-related functions:
REPLY TOPIC, SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE, FAVORITE/UNFAVORITE.

 

                  

The buttons at the bottom of each individual message allow you to perform message-related functions:
QUICK REPLY, REPLY, QUOTE, EDIT, THANK YOU (if available).

Each function is described following.

Topic-Related Functions: Jump to Top/Bottom of Page, Reply, Subscribe, Favorite

Jump to Top/Bottom of Page

 / :

Select the down arrow button to jump to the bottom of the page. At the bottom of the page, select the up arrow button to jump back to the top.

Reply to Topic

:

Select this button to participate in a topic discussion. The system will display the Reply Topic screen.

Populate the following fields:

·        Subject: The original topic subject, as entered by the topic creator, appears here. It is not necessary to modify this.

·        Topic Icon: The original topic icon, as entered by the topic creator, is selected here. It is not necessary to change this.

·        Message: Type your reply message in this window. Use the formatting options to the right of Boardcode to format text in your message, to add a table, to add a spoiler (which hides spoiler text so readers must click on it to reveal the text), to hide text from guests, and to insert other items/links into the message. You may also add emoticons from the list.

·        Enlarge /Shrink: Select Enlarge to increase the size of the message window. Select Shrink to decrease the size of the message window.

Preview: Select this button to preview your message before posting.

Submit: Select this button to post your message to the forum.

Cancel: Select this button to cancel the new topic.

Subscribe to (or Unsubscribe from ) Topic

While in topic view, select this button to subscribe to (or unsubscribe from ) the topic. When subscribed, the system will notify you of replies to the topic. Topics to which you are subscribed are easily accessible from the "Subscriptions" list in your user profile.

Favorite/Unfavorite Topic

While in topic view, select this button to favorite (or unfavorite) the topic. Favorited topics are easily accessible from the "Favorites" list in your user profile.

Message-Related Functions: Thank you, Quick Reply, Reply, Quote, Edit

Thank You

                  

The buttons at the bottom of individual messages allow you to perform message-related functions:
QUICK REPLY, REPLY, QUOTE, EDIT, THANK YOU (if available).

 

: If another user has replied in a topic, this button appears in the bottom left corner of her message window. Select this button if you would like to thank the other user for her input into the discussion. The other user is notified of your thank you.

 

The number of thank yous that you receive are tallied near the bottom of your profile summary.

Quick Reply

: Select this button if you would like to quickly respond to a message without navigating away to the full-featured Reply Topic page. A small response widow will appear within the original message.

In this quick reply window, the formatting options are not displayed, but if you know the codes, you may still enter them. Simply type your response and select Submit or Cancel. There is no preview option available.

Reply

: Select this button to open the Reply Topic screen and access all reply features.

Populate the following fields:

·        Subject: The original topic subject, as entered by the topic creator, appears here. It is not necessary to modify this.

·        Topic Icon: The original topic icon, as entered by the topic creator, is selected here. It is not necessary to change this.

·        Message: Type your reply message in this window. Use the formatting options to the right of Boardcode to format text in your message, to add a table, to add a spoiler (which hides spoiler text so readers must click on it to reveal the text), to hide text from guests, and to insert other items/links into the message. You may also add emoticons from the list.

·        Enlarge /Shrink: Select Enlarge to increase the size of the message window. Select Shrink to decrease the size of the message window.

Preview: Select this button to preview your message before posting.

Submit: Select this button to post your message to the forum.

Cancel: Select this button to cancel the new topic.

Quote

: Select this button at the bottom of a post you would like to quote. The system will copy the post and include it in your "Reply Topic" text. Add your own text before and/or after the quoted text, and preview, submit or cancel, as usual.

Edit

: Select this button to edit a post you had previously submitted. The Edit Post screen appears. Modify your post, enter your reason for editing in the designated field (if desired), and preview, submit or cancel.


 

Private Messaging: Location, Inbox, Outbox, Trashcan, Compose

Select the Private Messages link in the upper right-hand corner of the forum login bar to access the MomMD Forum Private Messaging tool.

Inbox, Outbox, Trashcan

When you enter the private messaging tool, the Inbox tab is selected by default.

The envelope icon displays whether a message has been read () or remains unread ().

Select a message to read it.

: Select this icon to forward the message.

: Select this icon to delete the message.

Messages you delete will move to the Trashcan tab. They will remain in the trashcan for 48 hours before being erased. To restore the message to the Inbox, select the icon.

To view messages you have sent, select the Outbox tab.

Compose a Private Message

To compose a new message, select the Compose tab.

You may enter a message recipient by typing the display name in the To field or by selecting the name from a list. To access the member list, select Show users. Scroll through the dropdown menu, find the desired member name, and select it to add it to the message recipient field. If you are messaging more than one member, separate member names with a comma.

Enter your message, up to 2500 characters.

To receive a copy of the message in your inbox, select the "copy to me" box.

Select Send to send the message.

Private Messaging E-mail Notification Settings

To access email notification settings, select Settings at the bottom of any private messaging tab.

Select the desired radio button to set when (if ever) you would like to receive email notifications.

Select Save changes to apply your selection.
